Affiliate Marketing Advice for Newbies: How to Get Higher Email Open Rates [Tutorial]

Ohhhh boy, the things you learn when you get serious about affiliate marketing. More experienced marketers will already know this but if you’re a newbie, you might not even know it exists or how to do it. If you want to get higher email open rates, doing this one little thing — which can take less than a minute — will do the trick.

Following is how I was able to improve email click through rates on campaigns I sent out.

One Easy Thing You Can Do to  Get Higher Open Email Rates

I signed up to be an affiliate for the Work-at-Home Summit. And by the way, if you haven’t checked it out, you should — to become and affiliate and to learn how to start a profitable work-from-home business. The summit practically sells itself, featuring over 70 types of businesses you can start. But, I digress.

The reason I’m telling you this is, when Caitlin (the Summit creator and brains behind this popular, freelance proofreading course) sent out her affiliate package, one of the things she mentioned was emailing your list AGAIN; as in resending emails to recipients who didn’t open it the first time.

I’ve only done this a few times in my whole career as an email marketer; something I’ve been doing seriously since 2009. Do you know how much money I’ve left on the table over the years by not doing this?! I could kick myself. But in the words of the inimitable Maya Angelou, “When you know better, you do better.”

Affiliate Marketers: Email More to Earn More

When I sent out the initial email about the Summit, 14.2% opened it. Exactly one week (7 days) later, I sent out the same email, but with a different headline. Forty-eight hours later, 7.2% had opened it — which means that almost 23% of my list saw that message in totoal. Not too bad, right? Now for some grins and giggles, let’s do some math.

Let’s say that you have a list of 2,500 subscribers — not tiny, tiny, but nowhwere near big either. And, let’s say the product you’re promoting is $297 (at a 40% commission for you = that’s $118 per sale).Email More. Earn More! Sign up with AWeber to get started today.

Earn $118+ in Less Than 2 Minutes?

If 7.2% of your 2,500 subscribers opened that second email, that means an extra 18 people people saw your offer. Talking about getting higher email open rates; you just increased your open rate by over 50 percent!

Even if just one of them purchased what you’re promoting, that’s an $118 EXTRA you earned — just for taking a couple of minutes (which is all it takes) to resend one email.

Now imagine if you had a list of 10,000; 20,000; or 50,000 subscribers. See how it can add up — fast?! This is why I highly recommend resending important emails (more on this below) to “Unopeneds”.

I use AWeber for my email marketing needs; I have since 2009. It allows you to do all kinds of things, like segments lists — which is what this is called.

Most list management companies have this capability, but many email marketers don’t use these higher-end functions. I know I didn’t — and like I said, I’ve been sending out newsletters for years.

Now, it’s something I’m conscious of doing for those campaigns I think will convert well.

This brings me to how often to resend emails.

It should definitely be done judiciously; otherwise, you run the risk of your emails being deemed spam by your list management provider. And, your unsubscribe rate could increase too.

How to Increase Your Email Open Rate … the Smart Way

Here’s an informative post on how to increase your email open rate by resending to “unopeneds” — by doing it the smart way. Following are five key takeaways.

(i) Only do it for important campaigns

In other words, don’t do it for every newsletter and/or email campaign you send out. Only do so for those you think are important enough and will convert well.

(ii) Change the subject line

This way, if the first one didn’t appeal to a subscriber, you, in essence, get a second bite at the “open this email” apple.

(iii) Change the time you send

Soemtimes people don’t open an email simply because it was sent at the wrong time. So if your last email was sent at 10 in the morning, try sending the second one  at 10 pm to catch the night owls.

(iv) Don’t resend too quick

I waited 7 days to resend my email. I would have done it sooner had I thought about it, to be honest. According to the linked-to post above, on average, 3 days is optimal between sends.

(v) Check your analytics

As in, dig into your numbers to see what they say. Did you your unsubscribe rate go up significantly? What was the email open rate compared to the first email? Did you see any sales (conversions)? In your “gut,” do you think re-sending the email was worth it?

BTW, following is how to segment your list to resend to those who didn’t open it the first time.

How to Segment Your List in AWeber to Re-Send to “Unopeneds”

Before we get started, oen thing I want to say is, when you sign up for AWeber (or any email list manager), spend some time tooling around your dashboard to learn its various functions. It can earn you thousands of dollars over the years if you take the time to educate yourself like this. And, this isn’t hard to do.

Most email list management providers have in-depth tutorials — in written and video form — that show you how to get the most out of your email marketing efforts. Before joining the Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing Facebook group (discussed below), I had no idea just how powerful email marketing could be because I’d never taken the time to learn.

With that being said, here’s how to segment your list(s) to re-seend emails to those who didn’t open it the first time. Note: Click all images for larger view.

You’re picking out the ones who didn’t open the initial email from the ones who did. To do this, log in and go to “Messages”. Click on the one from the list that appears that you want to resend.

2. Find “Unopeneds”

To accomplish this, go to: Messenger > Broadcasts. Then, select the message (that has already been sent once) from those listed that you want to resend. Click on it. 9. Select “Schedule a Broadcast” or “Add to Follow Up Series”

I usually select BroadcastIn case you dont ‘know, following is the difference between the two.

What is a “Broadcast” Email in AWeber?

This is a newsletter/email you send out eg, a daily, weekly, monthly newletter. You “broadcast” it to your list by emailng it to them, usually only once.

What Does “Add to Follow Up Series” Mean in AWeber?

It is a sequence of emails that automatically go out to subscribers after they sign up to your list. It’s usually part of a “series” of emails, which is why it’s called a “Follow-up Series.”

For example, you know when you sign up to an email list and you start receiving emails on a regular basis? It oculd be every day, every few days, every week, etc.; in short, on any schedule the list owner decides.

These are follow-up emails. So as soon as you subscribe, you will be “rolled into” the series of emails being sent. You’ll receive the “Welcome” email and all successive emails in the sequence until it’s done. Some email marketes have email series that go on for months, even a year or  more.

Email sequences are great to make money money on auto-pilot as an affiliate marketer because they keep you front and center with your subscribers. Here’s a great post that explains the benefits of a follow-up email series in detail.

Note: Broadcasted emails can be added to a follow-ip series at a later date; just FYI.

10. Send

Fill in all the particulars on this screen, then hit “Send.”
