17 Freelance Writing Job Leads

Here are some job leads to start off the week. What I remain struck by is just how many different kinds of writing jobs are out there — and how much content is needed.

Many companies are looking for writers to produce various types of content, eg, lead-generating emails, ebooks and lead magnets, long-form web content, etc. So whether you’re a new freelance writer, or a more experienced one, there’s something for everyone.

Wanna Land the Gig: Here’s What NOT to Do

FYI, here’s some timeless info on what NOT to do when applying for online writing jobs. I’ve have more than 15 years under my belt as a recruiter, and I’ve been on both sides of the hiring desk. This info comes from all of my years of experience.

1. Geological Content Writer: The Content Writer will be writing short, 500-word or less articles to be featured on Geology specific blogs and newsletters every week. Note: This position is with a staffing agency. Learn more about why it pays to apply for jobs with agencies.

Rate: $25-$28/hour

2. Pop Culture Script Writers: We’re Wisecrack, a media collective that mixes culture criticism with irreverence and comedy. We’re looking for writers who can criticize and analyze pop culture. Writers will take a research document and deliver a script that communicated the ideas in the context of the show, game, or movie. It’s important that you can take complicated concepts and deliver them in a robust, entertaining, and easy-to-understand manner.

Rate: $350-$400 for all in research+script. Goes up with experience.

3. Freelance Writer (Substance Abuse): Caron Treatment Centers, a nationally recognized non-profit provider of alcohol and drug addiction treatment, is seeking a freelance writer.

Duties include, but are not limited to: writing content for new marketing materials/collateral and update & revise existing materials; email marketing campaigns; website – creating new page content & editing existing content, including for SEO purposes; internal communication; social media content; and conducting research and interviews with Caron staff and other identified stakeholders in order to create new and update existing content for the above purposes.

Rate: Not listed.

4. Personal Finance Article Writer: Looking for 1-2 writers (with experience writing personal finance content) to complete 15-20 articles per month for a variety of websites. Expected length of article is between 500-750 words (a few each month will be required to be longer).

Rate: $40-$45 (average rate per article)

5. Blog Writer (Tea): Looking for 1 writer to write blog posts about/related to tea. You should be passionate about tea, know a lot about it, be good at finding topics to write about and writing posts that are grammatically correct, engaging, are easy to read and can keep readers’ attention.

Rate: $100/post.

6. Digital Media Copywriter: This is a freelance role requiring 20 hours per week for approximately 14 weeks. This role requires a marketing copywriter with experience writing for social media, digital marketing, website copy, communications or related fields; specifically including online content, engagement and community management.

This role will focus on social media website/blog writing and maintenance, content strategy and development of the existing social media channels and email marketing efforts, and will act as a support role for the Marketing Manager.

7. Freelance (SEO) Content Writer: If you love working in your pajamas while executing high-quality blog posts and webpage copy geared towards the automotive industry, then you have the potential to be a Freelance Content Writer. Compose blog posts and webpage copy for numerous clients (Jack of all trades, master of all) using targeted keywords and anchor text.

8. Freelance Blogger/Writer: SEO company seeks web writers to write on a variety of topics for client sites.

Rate: Not listed.

9. FT, Off-Site Writers (Meditation/Mindfulness): Calm, a leading mindfulness meditation app, is seeking full-time (off-site) writers to create guided meditations and/or mindfulness discourses for production as audio programs. These positions report directly to Calm’s Head of Content, and will collaborate with other team members, including writers, editors, and marketers. We are seeking two types of writers: Writers who are great with structure and prose and have some experience with mindfulness and meditation, AND individuals with long term meditation and mindfulness expertise.

Rate: Not listed.

10. Real Estate Writers: Investment firm seeks experienced writers and content managers to contribute stories to our blog about the latest real estate trends and tips. Some of the content will be educational for U.S. real estate investors. Some of the content will be entertaining and exciting for potential investors of luxury vacation properties.

Rate: Not listed. Writers are paid per article and per lead magnet. Payment will be sent once the article and lead magnet are developed and approved by the editor.

11. Real Estate Writers: Real Estate Publishing Company with virtual employees all over America – that’s based out of Florida. (No Real Estate Experience needed.) Our rapidly growing business desperately needs people who can come up with new blog ideas and write them. We don’t care if you offend a few people. We like people with opinions. We care more about quality than quantity. And, the only thing that really matters is readership. Not stupid editorial opinions.

Rate: $35,000 to $40,000/year

12. Freelance Writers: Latino Leaders Magazine is a bi-monthly publication that highlights the leadership and successes of Latinos. We cover different areas such as business, health, technology, corporate, law, finance, energy and gas, insurance, arts and more! With national circulation, this publication has become a leading source for the community.

As we continue to grow, our team also grows. That is why Latino Leaders is looking for freelance writers to write captivating articles (500-1000 words) for trailblazing Latinos/Latinas, events, and topics concerning the Latino community.

Rate: Negotiated based on experience.

13. Blogger (Engineering): We are a highly specialized B2B marketing firm that provides thought leadership content for our clients’ blogs. We’re looking for someone with an electrical engineering background to ghostwrite blog posts for an audience of electrical engineers about practical issues related to designing printed circuit boards. This can be full-time, or as a freelancer. The blog articles range loosely from 750–900 words.

Rate: Pay is negotiable and competitive.

14. Gaming Writers: The editorial team at TheGamer.com is looking for writers and journalists to contribute dynamic list-based articles for our new site. At TheGamer, we require writers who are driven to succeed, have a way with words, and keep up with what’s trending in the world of gaming. We’re looking for original, informative, and eye-catching articles that will change the way people think about the gaming world!

15. SEO Content Writer: We are a growing web design agency seeking a talented writer to join us. You will help us to create content for our website and our clients’ websites. Ideally, you’d also manage a content marketing campaign, including blog articles, social media posts, e-books, and more.

Rate: $20 per 500 words

16. Quiz Writers: The editorial team at Valnet Inc. is looking for writers to contribute quizzes for a number of our sites! We need writers who are driven to succeed, have a way with words, and keep up with what’s trending. We’re looking for freelance writers who are willing to be dedicated and consistent contributors to the site. Passion is key, so writing about what you love is the best way to achieve success.

Rate: TBD

17. Freelance Tech Writers: You’ll be writing on everything from web hosting to antique programming languages, from internet law to the social impact of encryption. And you’ll be working as part of a pool of talented writers producing 10,000s of words of content per week to be published on WhoIsHostingThis.com, a site that reaches many millions of users every year.

Rate: TBD; Writers invoice every other week, and get paid in US dollars by PayPal or wire transfer.
