5 Things You Should Know When Starting Your Freelance Writing Business from Scratch

How to Start an SEO Writing Business

A few weeks ago, I told you about a free ebook I contributed to entitled Starting Your Online Freelance Business from Scratch. Eleven entrepreneurs (including moi!) contributed to this work, which contained valuable information on everything from marketing to accounting.

While the ebook was comprehensive, there was much more that I wanted to say, so I wrote a follow-up post with more specifics based on my experience as a freelance writing business owner. In my regular guest post on e-Junkie this time entitled Starting An Online Business From Scratch? Here Are 5 Things You Need To Know, we discuss . . .

1. Why you need a business plan – and it’s probably not for the reason you think;

2. Why freelance writers need to learn SEO – it’s no longer an option to running a successful freelance writing business, it’s definitely become a necessity;

3. Why social media is critical to your success – like SEO, it’s become a necessary part of operating an online business. And not for nothing if you’re not up on social media, you’ll likely be losing a lot of gigs to freelance writers who are adept at this medium;

4. Why you need to take control of your blog/website. Trust me, you do not want to be at the mercy of ANYONE when it comes to this. You don’t have to be a tech whiz, but you must, must, must learn how to – at a minimum – update your freelance writing blog/website. I explain why in the post; and

How to Start an SEO Writing Business5. Pricing your services – cheap is not the way to go. The number one mistake almost all new business owners make – no matter what their business is – is under pricing. I explain why “being the cheapest is NOT the way to go.”

Of course, when it comes to business, it’s a never-ending conversation and that’s why I’d love to hear your input, so don’t be shy about sharing in the comments section, ok?

Holiday Plans?

For my American friends, I hope you’re looking forward to the upcoming 4th of July holiday. We’re supposed to get tons of rain here in the ATL, but I have friends coming in from New York, so I’m super psyched anyway.

We’d already decided to BBQ inside because none of us are adept at grilling. I don’t blame my NYC friends for not knowing their way around a grill but I was raised in the country, so I should be ashamed of myself – but I’m not! My stepdad used to handle all the grilling – I just never got around to being proficient at it.

I’m rushing to finish up early today so I can mow my lawn before the rain hits (oh pretty, pretty please hold off rain!).

What are your plans for the 4th? Grilling? Beach? TV?

However you celebrate, be careful – but have tons of fun with lots of fireworks. 🙂
