How to Find Time to Make Money Blogging: Advice for New Affiliate Marketers

If you’re a freelance writer, you’re perfectly positioned to make money blogging by promoting affiliate products and services. If you’ve been a reader of this blog for awhile, you know that I’m a huge advocate of writers developing more than one income stream.

For example, I put my writing skill to use in a few different ways, ie: self-publishing my own line of ebooks (fiction and non-fiction); developing and teaching ecourses; and promoting affiliate products and services.

Help for Brand-Spanking-New Affiliate Marketers

In my affiliate marketing Facebook group (which you can be invited to by subscribing here), every day I post a meme to help participants stay on top of their goals. The days are broken down like this:

Map It Out Monday: This is the day goals are declared for the week, eg, what specifically will you do this week to help you achieve your overall goals) as an affiliate marketer.

Tell Me Tuesday: Group participants can leave a comment to tell me what they’re struggling with, and I do my best to help them figure out a course of action moving forward.

Where Are You Wednesday: Update on goals set on Monday.

Thoughtful Thursday: This is the day group members can share anything that will help others earn and/or learn. This can be as simple as a word of encouragement, to a link to an article, to answering a question posed by a group member.

Follow Me Friday: Members list their social media profiles for others to follow.

As you can see, it’s a very structured group designed to maximize affiliate marketing success.

How to Make Money with a Blog: Advice for BeginnersHow to Make Money Blogging: 4 Words Every Newbie Needs to Know

The day before yesterday (on “Tell Me Tuesday”) I received the following comment from a group member.

Sometimes it can be overwhelming. I have 2 affiliate products that I want to promote + 1 of my own. I would have to create separate social media pages dedicated to each separate product and each audience.

How do you find time to create Pinterest posts, Facebook and other social sites post daily and be ‘consistent’ without burning out?

This is a very common frustration for new bloggers and affiliate marketers (experienced ones too), because burnout is real.

And with the 100 and one other things you have to learn how to do if you can’t afford to pay someone to do them for you, the amount of work it takes to get a new blog up and going and earning affiliate marketing income can seem overwhelming.

That’s why knowing what to pay attention to and what to tune out is so important.

Right now, I’m working on a monster post for next week entitled: How to Make Money Blogging for Beginners: A Simple 3-Step Plan for Earning $10,000+/Month. In that post, we’ll tackle exactly what to do to start making money from your blog.

You see, once you know what to do, it’s easy to put the pedal to the medal and start earning – relatively quickly.

Over the last year and a half or so of researching what goes into starting a successful blog, I’ve learned a ton, and boiled it down to the three simple steps we’ll discuss in next week’s post. In the meantime, following was my answer to the comment posted to the group.

Finding Time to Make Money Blogging

Remember, this aspiring blogger/affiliate marketer wrote, in part:

My Answer

This is exactly why you should only promote things that are in your niche. If you do this, you won’t have to do things like create separate social media pages dedicated to each separate product and each audience.

How to Promote Affiliate Products on your Blog without “Selling”

When you create a niche-specific blog, all of your content is created specifically for that audience. So all you have to do is weave your affiliate products and services into your content. And this should be done naturally, like the links in this post.

For another example, see my latest blog post on VA services, which features the latest affiliate product I’m promoting. I’m talking to freelance writers (my intended audience) about a service they may want to consider offering. I didn’t create a separate social media account for this product. I promoted it via my regular social media channels (eg, Twitter, FB, Pinterest).

And this method of “non-selling” works beautifully when you’re trying to make money blogging. Proof? Exactly one week to the day after I wrote that post, I got my first affiliate sale. See?

And the beauty of it is, this post will stay on my site forever (unless the program creators go under), which means I have the potential to earn from it for years. This is the real value of learning how to make money blogging. You put in one-time effort, and ostensibly earn forever.

Not to overstress, but that’s the magic of creating a niche-specific blog. You can naturally promote products and services that are relevant and helpful to that audience.

Starting a Money-Making Blog When You Work Full-Time

As for finding time to promote, blogging/writing is my full-time job, so it’s easier for me than someone who may be still working a full-time job. I’ve done both though and while it is more difficult with a job, it’s far from impossible. You just have to be super regimented about carving out time to work on your blog.

Start out by coming up with a set number of hours per day/week you can devote to your blog to grow it. Focus on traffic first — don’t focus so much on making money right away.

Select a few “foundational” products you can promote as you’re growing your blog that everyone needs, eg: web hosting; email list management services like Aweber; domain name registration; a product you created that is SPECIFIC to your target audience, etc. Then, create killer content and promote the hell out of it.

Once traffic starts coming, you’ll start to make money. It really is that simple. Without traffic nothing happens, so again, focus on that first, then you can start expanding the range of affiliate products you promote.

Make Money Blogging Tip Many Newbies Don’t Consider

Many affiliate marketers do quite well without creating a product or service of their own. But many report that they really started raking the big bucks in after they created their own product. This has been my experience.

So when you start your blog, as you’re researching, writing posts and reading other blogs, do so with an eye towards a product or service you can create. It can easily skyrocket your affiliate marketing earnings, or at the very least, stabilize them. Proof? Last month, I earned almost $3,000 in a 17-day period from my courses on Teachable.

Create and Sell Online Courses: How to Make Money Before You Write a WordTools you’ll need to successfully create and sell online courses include:

A list management service like Aweber to start building your subscriber list;

A professional delivery platform like Teachable (remember it’s free to sign up); and

Your own self-hosted website, which will be a home on the web for you to effectively market your course.

FYI, you can get some gorgeous WordPress themes here, which will make you look like a million-dollar ecourse developer right off the bat!

This month (August) — my absolute slowest month of the year — I earned almost $2,000. And this is literally pennies compared to what many course creators earn. I’ll talk about digital product creation a bit more in the post I’m working on for next week. Now, back to finding time to blog.

Make Money Blogging: The 10-Minute Solution

Can you find 10-minute increments of time? The reason I ask this is, there’s an author who became very successful writing in 10-minute increments. She had five – yeah, 5! – small children who she home-schooled no less, and could only write in very short spurts of 10 minutes. So, she made those minutes count. Here’s her complete story.

I share it because to me, mothers are the womb from which everything springs – life, creativity, determination. If a mom of five can find time to achieve her dreams, you can too. It’s all about priorities.

4 Words You Need to Know to Make Money Blogging

Manage your time well. This can’t be stressed enough, especially if you’re starting your blog while working a job — part-time or full-time. Like the 10-minute author, this means using every minute of every day wisely. Tip: Time-block your days. I’ve been doing this for a few years now. I fall off the wagon from time to time and my results show it. But when I time-block my days and stick to it, I’m always amazed at the progress I make.

When you time-block your days, you will be able to see in black and white what you need to be doing to make progress. You’d be amazed at how even little blocks of time – used wisely and consistently – can add up to big progress.
