Freelance Writers: What It Feels Like to Live Life on Your Own Terms (in Negril, Jamaica)

May 26, 2010

If you’re a regular reader, you know that I’ve been planning to move to Jamaica. Yesterday, that dream came true. I finally made the move and am settling into my little studio apartment here.

So, what does that have to do with freelance writing (as this is a newsletter about freelance writing)? Actually, everything.

Freelance Writers: Don’t Wait to Start Working on Your Bucket List

One of the reasons I like being a freelance writer is that I can do it from anywhere in the world — as long as there’s an internet connection.

freelance-writers-life-living-abroadMost of us are tethered to a life that controls us — instead of us controlling it. We don’t live; we exist.

We stay stuck in jobs that we hate at worst and tolerate at best. And this is so we can pay mortgages we can barely afford, drive too-big cars we don’t need and give our children better lives.

BUT — is this living? You deserve the life you want to give to your children. And you don’t have to wait to start living life the way you want when you retire or when the children are grown. ESPECIALLY if you’re a freelance writer.

    Hi Yuwanda,

Congratulations on making the move to Jamaica! Living the dream is good. Sure, life still has to be lived with all its foibles, but doing what you want to do is a great feeling. I know, we moved from Scotland to Spain three plus years ago in search of a better life. I have no regrets.

Today I make my living from SEO writing, mainly because I bought your ebook showing me how to charge decent money :-) . . . And every time I get fed up with writing on some boring subject or other that I have to do, I stop and remember what it was like at a time before I was paid well for my writing. Then I get just on with the writing and feel grateful!

Thanks again for your ebook, the one that opened my eyes to how I could earn sensible money from my writing. It’s changed my life a lot.

And good luck in Jamaica. I hope you are happy there. I’ve never been there, but who knows… maybe someday… Meanwhile, Spain is good enough for me!
