It’s April 15th, Tax Day in the U.S. Yoohooo.
NOT!
Who likes paying taxes? Not me. To help you out, below you’ll find some info from a tax professional for freelance writers and other independent professionals. I also give you a tip I use every year that helps me with my taxes. .
3 Tax Tips from a Tax Professional for Freelancer Writers and Other Independent Contractors
I received the following info from a tax professional in response to the post, Freelance Writing Business Tax Tips: 4 Things You Can Do to Make Filing Your Taxes Easier.
Hi Yuwanda,
Tax time starts now (at the beginning of the year) for freelancers and self-employed professionals and many are worried about properly filing taxes on their own. Outright.com, the free online financial management platform, is here to help during tax season with simple advice and can’t miss deductions that will help you save money now.
Outright.com’s CEO, Kevin Reeth, a tax and entrepreneur expert, has some quick and easy tips . . . to simplify tax time and make sure they’re taking advantage of all the available deductions.
Kevin recommends:
1. Set Deadlines: Create a specific calendar for tax related deadlines. One of the biggest adjustments to life as an entrepreneur is keeping track of all the different tax-related deadlines and missing any key dates can cause you to pay some hefty penalties. Outright.com provides an online calendar that can be added to Google, Outlook and iCal calendars: https://secure.outright.com/tax_calendar.
2. Don’t Overlook Deductions: Don’t forget those deductions that too many overlook. You can deduct $.55 cents for every mile traveled for business in 2009 – that can add up quickly. Plus, the IRS has relaxed some of the eligibility rules for claiming a home office deduction. So long as you use a dedicated space in your home exclusively for business, you can write off a percentage of large expenses like rent, heat, electricity, water, insurance, etc.
3. Stay Organized: The worst possible thing would be to miss out on any deductions due to disorganization of records. Be sure to set aside a specific place to collect and group everything tax-related, whether it’s a filing cabinet, a shoebox or an online service. Having everything together will ease the stress of tax time.
In addition, Outright.com has launched a one-stop platform for all things tax-related on www.righttaxesnow.com. Filers can get questions answered by a community of bookkeepers and keep track of the can’t-miss deductions that are easily overlooked. And to make tax time even easier, Outright has just launched a new automated1099 filing service so busy business owners have one less stress to deal with during tax time.
How to Buy Time for Filing Your Taxes If You’re Unorganized and/or Just Need More Time
I just want to add one tax tip for those who are unorganized and/or not sure about which deductions they can take. File a tax extension. I do it almost every year (for some reason, April 15th just comes too quick for me).
It only takes about a minute (it’s one form) and will give you anywhere from 4 to 6 months more time to get your tax house in order (eg, locate and categorize receipts, get tax advice, etc.).
Happy Tax Day Everybody (If that’s not an oxymoronic statement, I don’t know what is!).
Now for the really good stuff . . .
