Wachovia: Another Bank Failure, Another Opportunity for Freelance Writers
by Yuwanda Black

Wachovia is the latest victim of the banking industry. According to the 9/29/08 article in the New York Times, Citigroup Buys Bank Operations of Wachovia:

Citigroup reached an agreement early Monday morning to acquire the banking operations of the Wachovia Corporation . . . The deal . . . concentrates Americans’ bank deposits in the hands of three banks: Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase and Citigroup . . .

Why Buyouts, Takeovers and Mergers Mean More Work for Freelance Writers

Thousands of employees will probably lose their jobs. This presents a perfect opportunity for freelance writers to add to their client rosters. Why/how?

Well, with the merger, marketing materials – with the name change from Wachovia to Citibank will have to go out, changes to web copy will have to be made, instructional manuals and booklets for new and old customers will have to be written.

And, all of this will have to be done in a short period of time.

Commerce doesn’t stop when a merger, buyout or takeover happens. What usually happens is that the same amount of work has to get done in a shorter period of time – which means an excellent opportunity for freelance writers and other creative professionals to pick up new gigs. And, possibly add long-time clients to their rosters.

The Best Way for Freelance Writers to Capitalize On the Current Financial Crisis

Blogging: One of the best ways to capitalize on the current market turmoil is to blog about it and drive traffic to your site. These are known as link bait articles. I prefer to think of them as taking what’s happening in the news and finding what’s relevant about it to/for your niche.

For example, my niche is freelance writing. Freelance writing is a work-from-home job. This fact alone makes it relevant to many things that are happening in the news today (eg, bank failures, the current gas crisis, job security, etc.).

I’ve written on all of these: ie: save on gas by working at home; how to create job security in a global economy, and how to create passive income for retirement.

Writing articles like these does two things for you as a freelance writer.

(i) It makes great search engine fodder. It drives traffic to your site – if you use the right keywords.

(ii) It can serve as writing samples to show to potential clients. This is particularly true if you are an SEO writer. You can demonstrate to clients how you can write link bait articles to drive continuous traffic to their sites.

(iii) Your website/blog will become a relevant news spot for your niche. For example, I frequently write on relevant topics “snatched from the headlines” as the intro to the TV show Law & Order says.

My mission at InkwellEditorial.com is not just to showcase articles about freelance writing, but to make the site relevant to the totality of freelance writers’ lives. Hence, articles on retirement, job security,
going green, etc. are all important – as long as I can point out how they’re relevant to the lives of freelance writers and their loved ones.

While at first blush the failure of another major bank (Wachovia in this case) may not seem to be relevant to freelance writers, as you can see, it is -- on several levels.
