Recently, I received the following question from a follower on Twitter:

@PenStar_words asked in a two-part tweet:

@InkwellEditor Hi Yuwanda. Is there a resource on your site that covers email marketing aimed at specific sectors?

@InkwellEditor For instance in my case that would be online galleries as opposed to generalised SEO companies.

I responded:

@PenStar_words Penny, sorry 4 the delay in answering ur Q “Is there a resource on my site that covers email mktng aimed at specific niches?”

@PenStar_words Not that I can think of. But think org’s when targeting niches, eg the Bar Association for Lawyers, the AMA for Doctors, etc.

She responded with a follow-up question, ie:

@InkwellEditor In terms of contacting orgs and asking to be added to their directories for example?

I responded:

@PenStar_words No; in terms of mining their databases 4 contacts. You may have to pay to get access, but lots of info can be found online.

Find a Niche Market: Where the Bulk of the Contacts are in Niche Markets

I wanted to expand upon this without the 140-character limitation of Twitter because it’s an excellent question about niche marketing, of which I’m a great advocate, as you know if you read this blog regularly.

One of the best ways to find contacts in niche markets is to look to industry organizations. Following are a few reasons why:

(i) You can find a lot of them all in one place;

(ii) You can build your niche marketing database quickly; and

(iii) It cuts down on your research time.

So, for example, if I wanted to target lawyers, one of the obvious places to start is the American Bar Association. All lawyers must belong to it, so it’s where you’re going to find them.

Many organizations like this have membership directories that lists all of their members. Now, getting access to these databases can be expensive.

Niche Marketing Strategy: 2 Ways to Gain Access to Membership Directories “for Free”

One way I’ve found to get around paying to access member contact information is to do a search for the organization’s name along with something like “proud member of. For example, continuing to use our example of attorneys, I did a Google search for the phrase “proud member of the American Bar Association.” Three hundred and fifty thousand (350,000) results were returned (see graphic just below).

Start clicking. You should be able to find at least a few hundred contacts using this method. And, while it can be time consuming, it’s worth the effort because you’re building your own in-house database.

The other method I use to find information without paying to access a membership’s database is to use social media.

How to Use Social Media in Your Niche Marketing Efforts

This is really simple. Once you find out what the main organizations are for a specific niche, find their social media accounts (eg, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.). A lot of their members will be followers.

Again, it will be time-consuming going through the, for example, Twitter streams of large organizations like the American Bar Association, but remember, this is a long-term investment in your freelance business.

FYI, at the time of this writing, the American Bar Association has over 7,000 followers on Twitter. You should have no problem mining a few hundred contacts from it.

How to Grow Your Niche Marketing Database So That Writing Jobs Will Continually Flow In

FYI, all contacts you find should be entered into some type of database so that you can contact them over and over again on a pre-determined schedule. Over time, if you consistently research and add contacts to your database, you may have a couple of thousand in it.

If you start marketing to them consistently, you will find that you’ll need to add fewer and fewer contacts because just staying in touch with those you have will keep you busy enough with writing work.

Word of Caution: No matter how busy you get, never stop adding fresh contacts to your database. When you first start out, you’ll spend a lot of time doing this. And, this is as it should be. Your database is the foundation of your freelance writing business, so never regret the time you invest in building it.

Over time, you’ll craft messages geared specifically for them, start asking for referrals and testimonials from them, offer them special deals and discounts, etc. In short, they’ll become your friends. So cultivate this list with care and never compromise it (eg, sell, spam, ignore).

Niche Marketing Advice for Freelance Writers: Conclusion

My sister tells me that I’m blessed with the mind of a marketer because I seem to come up with ways to market that others don’t think of.

I don’t do anything other than think logically and systematically. Basically, I figure out who I want to target, then think of where they’re likely to be. After this, it’s just a matter of going to those places and digging up info I want. The internet makes this super easy.

FYI, in How to Find Unpublished Freelance Writing Jobs, I discuss the 7 ways I’ve used to find freelance writing jobs that most don’t think of. And, all I did was apply the logic just above.

Hope this insight helps you with your niche marketing efforts.

Yuwanda,

I just purchased your ebook on 7 ways to market your freelance writing business. I’m only on page 19 – the second idea – and I must say that my writing business will never be the same again! (emphasis added) After reading only 2 of the 7 ideas you mention, I can’t believe I didn’t think of these before! Nobody mentions them in freelance writing discussions, and it’s no wonder that so many are hurting for clients. I am truly blown away!

Thank you for revolutionizing my business with this information.

This time of year, many are starting new things, eg, diets, exercise programs, quitting smoking . . . and starting businesses. That’s why I thought now would be a perfect time to go over what you need to do to start a home-based, freelance writing business.

As an aside, I was watching the Suze Orman show a few nights ago. It was around 1 in the morning and I was sleepily thumbing through the channels. I perked right up when I ran across her show (I love personal finance shows!). I managed to catch the last 15 minutes or so, just in time to hear her say that, in her opinion, the economy is not going to be adding jobs in record numbers any time soon. She said that for Americans to get back on their feet, they should look at starting some type of low-cost business.

Her exact words were:

if you are not employed, start looking to become an entrepreneur. i don’t care if that means a dog walker, give manicures, do anything like that. look into what you can do on your own without requiring a lot of capital, but for you to be able to pay the bills.

Freelancing writing fits this bill perfectly!

So if you’re new here – welcome. If you’ve been wanting to start a career as a freelance writer – whether it’s part-time or full-time — following is what, in my opinion (and considerable experience), you need to do.

How to Become a Freelance Writer in 7 Simple Steps

I. Select a Niche: I’ve discussed ad nauseam on this site why I believe freelance writers should specialize. The most important reason though, especially for newbies, is that you’ll land jobs quicker.

Read this post on why choosing a niche is so important as a freelance writer.

Related Article: Learn How to Develop a Freelance Writing Niche with No Experience

II. Decide Service Offerings: The best piece of advice I can give here is to start slow, especially if you’re still working a job. For example, when I first started out as an SEO writer I just offered SEO articles. As clients began to request more things (eg, blog posts, press releases, social media), I added those services – when I felt comfortable and when I knew I could afford to hire help.

It’s easy in certain sectors to get busy quickly as a freelance writer. Even writing a few articles a day can be hard because it’s not JUST the writing, it’s the research, the back and forth with the client, the proofreading, the editing, etc.

So start slow – with one or two services you’re comfortable with. You can always add on services as you grow (and can afford to hire help).

III. Create 3-5 Writing Samples: Once you select your niche, you need writing samples. They don’t have to be for “real” clients.

Just sit down and write samples for each type of service you plan to provide. For example, if you’re going to offer press releases, cases studies and general web articles, write one or two of each type – in your niche —to put on your website. Make sure they’re letter perfect.

Create perfect writing samples every time: Get the ebook Freelance Writing Samples: 5 Elements Samples that Land Freelance Writing Jobs Must Have.

IV. Set Your Freelance Writing Rates: This is probably the hardest part of starting a freelance writing career because rates are all over the place. Following is a series of posts I’ve written about it.

SEO Writing Rates: How to Determine What to Charge as an SEO Copywriter

How to Set Freelance Writing Rates for Online Writing Jobs: A Definitive Guide for Setting (and Getting) the Rates You Deserve

5 Types of Freelance Writing Rates (from About.com)

The best advice I can give is to research your niche to find out what the highs and lows are, figure out what you personally need to make to pay your bills, then set your rates accordingly.

Many will probably accuse you of being too cheap (newbies tend to go lower than higher). Don’t worry about this. If the rate feels right to you, go with it. Then, adjust accordingly as you settle into being a freelance writer. You’ll learn very quickly if you’re working for peanuts and need to raise your rates.

V. Lay Out a Simple Marketing Strategy: If you don’t have any money, there are a plethora of ways to find clients, eg, social media, email marketing, free article distribution, cold calling, etc. Only you can decide what works for you.

But, the most important thing to keep in mind is to systemize your marketing so that it becomes automatic. For example, if you’re going to use email marketing, reach out to a certain number of contacts each day; if you’re going to use article marketing, write and distribute a certain number of articles per week/month; etc.

Use marketing strategies you can afford to repeat because consistency is what will bring in jobs. If you send out 10 emails and wait two weeks to send out 10 more, it’s going to be slow going building a steady client base. It’s better to send out 2 emails per day, than 10 in one day once per week. And the reason is, the less frequently you market, the greater your chance of NOT marketing on a consistent basis. But, if you send out just a few emails per day, you increase your chance of making it a “daily habit.”

And, the more “touches” you send out, the greater your chance of landing clients.

See the logic?

Good!

One final thing about this step — whatever your marketing plan is, write it down, put it in a place where you can see/consult it every day — and follow it.

VI. Get a Website/Blog: Once you’ve decided on a niche, wrote your writing samples, and decided on your service offerings and rates, then it’s time to pull it all together in one place – on your freelance writing website!

And, it doesn’t have to be fancy. All you have to do is see my SEO writing company’s website for proof of this. I did this basic site myself. This one, InkwellEditorial.com, was designed by professionals. Clear difference. But, my SEO writing company’s site has worked well since 2008. Sure, I plan to have it redone someday. But, if I’d waited to get what I really wanted, I probably never would have gotten started as an SEO writer.

So, do a simple site yourself, or hire someone to do one for you. Affordable web designers can be found all over on sites like Craigslist and backpage. Place an ad, look at some portfolios of web designers and when you like what you see, hire them to do a simple freelance writing website for you.

VII. Just Get Started Already! Many who do all the above still fail to pull the trigger. They will hem, haw, procrastinate, find other stuff they “need” to do, etc. Once you’ve done the above, believe me, you’re more than ready to start your freelance writing career.

There will always, always, always be something else that you could do, should do and/or want to do before you start.

Don’t!

It can wait. All this is is fear at work. And, fear in this situation mostly stems from the unknown, which brings me to the last thing you need to do to start your freelance writing career . . .

Related Post: How to Become a Freelance Writer in 24 Hours or Less for $0 (forgive the design; this was our old site and I haven’t migrated all the pages over yet).

One More Thing . . . Make Time to Study: As in, to learn this profession. This can be as little as 15 or 20 minutes per day and it doesn’t have to cost a dime (although investing in classes, books and websites by reputable providers is never a waste of time).

Find the blog/website of a few successful freelance writers that appeal to you. Many of them dispense a ton of free information about how to freelance as a writer, eg, how to set your freelance writing rates, what to put on your website, how to deal with non-paying clients, web hosting companies, etc.

The beautiful thing about this type of freelance business is that you can always find an answer to your question because there’s a ton of it freely given by those who’ve been at this for a looonnnng time.

Hope this info helps, and good luck starting your freelance writing career.

We even touched on this in last week’s post on SeoWritingJobs.com when a new search engine optimization writer wrote in wanting to know what to charge for Web Copy SEO re-writes, among a host of other things – all because a potential client had asked her about it.

So I’m giving you a heads up – pitch clients on rewriting / repurposing content in 2012. It’s where a lot of opportunities in freelance writing are going to come from, in my opinion.

How to Pitch Clients to Land Freelance Writing Jobs That Involve Rewriting / Repurposing Content

I’m a big believer in educating clients first. Why? This gets them to invest in the process. And as I’ve said in a number of posts, if you’re the freelance writer who gets them invested in the process, who do you think they’re going to contact when they’re ready to have the job done?

Why you, of course!

One of the best ways to educate clients is to write and distribute special reports, like the one New Media Words produced on how to repurpose content to drive more traffic (which yields more sales and leads). It’s already on my calendar to do one at the beginning of the year talking about all of the search engine changes (ie, Google) that have come down the pike in the last year – focusing on the parts that have to do with content.

Search Engine Updates Mean More Writing Jobs for Freelancers

There’s been more than the infamous Panda Update. Google has stated that it does hundreds of updates a year. Only a few get the attention that Panda did. Some of the others you may not have heard of are:

Google Panda 2.5 Update: In spite of my research, I couldn’t figure out what exactly this update had to do with, other than it was more “minor updates” to Google Panda. {Disclaimer: I was sitting in a bar in Jamaica enjoying my last few days on the island before flying home for the holidays drinking rum and coke as I was writing this post, so wasn’t exactly CLEARLY focusing on what the heck I was looking for.}

Google’s “May Day” Update: This one “changed the way Google indexes so-called ‘long-tail’ queries, in which a user enters multiple keywords for a search;” and

Google’s “Caffeine” Update: This algorithm change, in November of this year, was all about building “on top of its [Google’s] previous “Caffeine” update in order to deliver more up-to-date and relevant search results, specifically those in areas where freshness matters. This includes things like recent events, hot topics, current reviews and breaking news items.”

So Why Do All of These Search Engine Changes Lead to More Work for Freelance Writers?

One of the running threads I hope you’re picking up on in all of these updates is that some sites lose and some sites win – as far as site traffic is concerned.

So what it boils down to is a win-win for freelance writers because if a site gains more traffic, then they strive to do more of what they’re doing to maintain their position. As for the losers, they need to recover. This means rewriting content, adding content, expanding content, etc.

How to Land Freelance Writing Jobs in 2012

So to land freelance writing jobs going into the New Year, one thing I’d advise is to put together a special report outlining a few search engine algorithm changes – as they relate to content marketing and development – and send it to prospects.

It doesn’t have to be long – 2-5 pages is sufficient. Post it on your freelance writing website as a free download (pdf), and email it to prospects in an email marketing campaign.

Opportunities in Freelance Writing Don’t Just Land in Your Lap: Be Proactive to Land Freelance Writing Jobs

It’s your job as a freelance writer to illustrate to clients the value you can bring to their business. Many of them are way too busy to even know about stuff like this. But, if you bring it to their attention in a well-written report, it can land you work for months – and possibly years – to come.

Note: I’m travelling this week, so will be hard to reach – unless you’re a student in one of Inkwell’s freelance writing ecourses (SEO copywriting ecourse; general freelance writing ecourse).

Hope you’re enjoying the holiday season. I’ve been too busy with training for marathons (finished the Reggae Marathon (half) in Jamaica on the 3rd of this month and have another one this Sunday, the 18th, in Atlanta); writing ebooks; and; this month – client projects – to fully take note. But, when I get back to the states tomorrow, my holiday will officially start.

Yes!

Until next week,

Like most of the posts here on InkwellEditorial.com, this one was inspired by readers who send me questions. Over the last month or so, I’ve received four emails from freelancers asking either directly or indirectly about how to grow their businesses – and it all starts with landing high-paying freelance writing jobs (or at least those that pay well enough to be able to pay outsourcers a decent rate.

Editor Note: Inkwell Editorial Holiday Deals and Discounts: We’ve got some good ones, eg, 1/2 off!

Following is the email that was very direct about it. This freelance writer wrote a very detailed question. Note: Even though he’s an SEO writer, the advice I’m going to give applies no matter what type of writing you specialize in, so that’s why it’s posted here, instead of on SeoWritingJobs.com, Inkwell’s sister blog devoted to web/SEO content writing:

Hi Yuwanda,

I generally like to figure things out on my own, but this is one of those times where I realize I need to get better at asking for help. I’m the [SEO] writer who secured about $5000 worth of work [see testimonial #24 at this link], (probably much more) with one firm, and I’ve continued to find enough business to make my wife and I’s expenses and a little more. So, I guess in a beginning sense, I’m successful, and I’m grateful for that.

However, my goal with this freelance writing is to make six figures the first year, if not more, as it seems to be very doable. The problem that I’m having is locating companies who will pay better rates than what I’m getting right now. Right now, most companies I know will pay $20-$25, and I have one committed to $30 per article. My goal is to get double that because I would like to be able to pay writers working for me better than a starvation wage of $15 per article, which is just not fair.

I followed your advice targeting the SEO companies, and that has worked so far. The problem is that I don’t know how to break into that next level of clientele. Right now, I’m thinking SEO companies may not be willing to do $40-$60 per article, but I could be mistaken on that.

FYI – I am a complete newbie to the marketing aspect of business. I guess what I’m asking is where should I try marketing in order to get higher-paying clientele? I could do offline marketing to small firms like one of your e-books suggested, but I don’t feel like enough of an expert to stand in front of people and tell them how it works yet (although I feel that’s close).

One of your reports says that “large firms” are looking for freelancers, and of course, would be able to pay higher rates. How do I go about contacting these “large firms?” Where are they? Do I call the front desk and ask to talk to someone in charge of that? I don’t think they’d let me through! Do I send a marketing e-mail or letter? I’m just 28 and quit my part-time job (only 10-15 hours per week anyway), so I’m still learning some aspects of business, and marketing is one of them.

I feel that I could write a great marketing letter to talk about how beneficial superb content writing is, but I just don’t know where/how to target businesses online. One possibility I heard would be to network with small business owners on an online forum. This makes sense to me.

I apologize if I’ve overstepped my bounds on any of this – most people don’t like to give away trade secrets, but I’ve never gotten the sense from you that you are that way. I guess I’m just looking to get pointed in the right direction is all. Thanks for any help that you are willing to provide.

~D
###

My Answer

The first thing I want to say is that some experts may disagree with what I’m about to tell you. But, I always dispense advice based on my own personal experiences, so take it for what it’s worth. Also, I never mind sharing my “trade secrets;” for, really they’re not secrets at all. It’s basically good ole hard work. So I don’t have anything I do that I don’t share to land freeelance writing jobs.

My “Secret” to Landing Freelance Writing Jobs

If there’s one thing I “may” do differently is . . . I tend to stick with things. Too many wannabe business owners give up when the going gets tough (and that’s why they remain “wannabes” instead of “doers”). I’m the type that tends to dig in and work harder when things get tough. I will try 9011 different ways to make something work before I’ll give up. And, I never give up — unless data says, “Oh, that’s NEVER going to work.”

But, with freelance writing (eg, landing high-paying clients), there’s no data that says that. In fact, all the “data” is to the contrary. Others land clients charging more, so my mindset is, so can I. Moving on . . . following is my advice to this freelancer.

Confidence: The #1 Skill Needed to Market to Clients for High-Paying Freelance Writing Jobs

To answer THIS freelancer in particular, I don’t think he’s ready to market for higher-paying clients simply because he’s not confident enough yet in his skills as a marketer. When you’re asking prospects to shell out more than what they consider is the “industry norm,” many of them are going to ask some pretty detailed questions.

And if you’re not knowledgeable, skilled or comfortable enough to answer, then you’re going to blow the sale before you even have a real shot at it – even if you could handle the work.

Selling to higher-end clients is really no different than selling to mid-priced or lower-end ones (at least as far as technique), but your mindset must be different. This boils down to one factor that I think many newbies (even experienced freelancers) lack, and that’s confidence.

You must have confidence in your abilities, your product/service, your presentation and your skills.

So with that being said, following is some insight for all freelance writers on how to market for – and land – higher-paying clients.

3 Things to Prepare to Market for High-Paying Freelance Writing Jobs

I. Results Package: The reason freelance writers like Bob Bly can ask for – and get – five figures to write a direct mail sales package is because he has proven results. He’s worked for some of the biggest names in the business, so clients don’t even quibble when they come to him.

They EXPECT to pay top dollar.

“But,” you may be thinking, “I’m no Bob Bly and haven’t written for noted companies, how do I get there?” Glad you asked.

One of the best places to start landing high-paying clients is your local Chamber of Commerce. I got some of my most lucrative gigs from Chambers because it’s where the small business owners in any community are. And many of them know jack, zilch, nada about marketing online.

All you have to do is show them how they can. Many of them have websites that don’t produce any sales or leads. As a freelance writer, it’s pretty easy to take a site from getting 20 or 30 visitors a day to 500 to 1,000 and is generating 3, 5 or 10 leads a week.

Right there what do you have? RESULTS! Results that you can turn into a case study and put as a pdf download on your site and use in your marketing efforts.

One of these can start landing you higher-paying clients.

II. Benefits Package: The second thing you need in your arsenal to market for high-paying freelance writing jobs is a benefits package. This is little more than a sales letter; again, one you can turn into a pdf file and put on your website.

When you’re asking clients to pay top dollar (or more than the industry norm); you’d better be able to justify your rates.

One way to do this is to – while spelling out benefits – explain to them that you understand your industry. The online marketing tutorial my SEO writing firm produced is a good example. It’s written as a tutorial for clients that explains what internet marketing is all about – and how SEO content is an integral part of that.

Note: Learn how I landed a high-paying SEO writing client as soon as a prospect finished reading this report.

Because my firm authored the report, when it comes time for them to hire an SEO writing company, we have a good shot at the business because the report illustrates that we know what the heck we’re talking about when it comes to not only SEO writing, but internet marketing.

The report connects a lot of dots – and if you’re the one doing the “teaching” when it comes time for a prospect to hire a firm to do some writing, again, you have a shot at the business.

FYI, this is known as content marketing – and is some of the most effective, FREE marketing you can do.

III. A Niche: One of the easiest ways to land high-paying freelance writing jobs is to niche it; ie, specialize in providing a certain type of content.

Now, this writer is an SEO writer, so he probably writes on everything under the sun (most SEO writers do). But, it still does not mean that you can’t specialize.

I’ve told the story ad nauseam, but the very first SEO writing job I landed I got because I pitched myself as a real estate/mortgage writer. The client hired me to write about mortgages, but I went on to write a few thousand SEO articles for them on everything from wire jewelry to ski resorts. But, it was my knowledge of real estate/mortgages that got my foot in the door with this firm.

Bob Bly, the copywriter mentioned earlier specializes in direct mail packages.

Another freelancer, who’s profiled in the ebook, Advice from Successful Freelancers: How They Built Their Biz & How You Can Too!, specializes in alternative health. She wrote in the update I did recently of this ebook (it was originally published in 2004 and I updated it a few months ago):

Hi Yuwanda,

Wow, 7 years went fast. :) Yes, business is booming and I’m still enjoying the freelance life very much. I’m working between 30 and 40 hours per week and enjoying a 6-figure income. (emphasis added) A few years ago, I decided to specialize in alternative health . . . and that helped me land higher quality, national-level clients.

Another thing about “niching it” is that you have an in-built client base to market to. For example, if you decided to specialize in providing SEO content to attorneys, you know where to go: eg, websites of attorneys, the ABA (American Bar Association) website; legal nonprofit groups; etc.

See what I mean?

Hope these four keys give you some insight into what it takes to market for high-paying freelance writing jobs.

Good luck!

The Writing Samples Quandary: One Thing That Terrifies Many New Freelance Writers

If a client asks to see their “portfolio of work,” most are stumped; they’re literally terrified of being asked this question. But, there’s no need to be.

You can create an online writing portfolio in just a matter of hours – really! And, start landing freelance writing jobs – online and off — almost immediately. How do I know?

Well . . . because I’ve done it!

Unsolicited Testimonial

I just wanted to tell you how invaluable I found your 87 page ebook on marketing to be. I read through it like a ravaged dog that had not eaten in several days. One of my handicaps has been that it is not easy for me to retain read information, there are days when I have to read through something three times before I get it. I got it the first time.

I wrote my press release and sent it out on the 10th of May receiving an average of 30 inquiries per hour on my website and orders. I was amazed when people emailed me and said they heard about my product on the radio. I have had inquiries from three local TV stations and one from Australia, a journalist from Upscale Magazine, Elle, Redbook and Vogue UK.

I am struggling now putting together a Media Kit. I just wanted you to know how much I appreciate what you are doing. I just wrote my first article today and sent it. The beginning of many. Thanks again. –Sharon P.

You will refer to this marketing kit over and over again as your business grows. It is specifically geared for those who are serious about starting/growing a small business, and who want to get a handle on marketing — now!

WHAT’S INCLUDED?

Included are eight low-cost, easy-to-implement marketing ideas. Each is powerful in its own right. Consistently combine two or more and watch your sales rapidly increase! Each idea is discussed in detail. Samples are provided for ready reference so that you will know exactly what is being referred to every step of the way. Three free bonus reports (details below) are also included.

Real-life examples are used. Nothing is more believable or concrete than hearing from someone who has “been there and done that.” If you start out using these methods, you will be well on your way to success.

“First say to yourself what you would be; and then do what you have to do.”
— Epictetus, Greek Philosopher

Marketing is the lifeblood of any business simply because people have to know you exist before they buy from you.

The marketing methods discussed are specifically for small business owners who want to learn how to create sustained growth and generate steady sales on a shoe-string budget. All of the methods are proven and don’t require massive amounts of time.

LEARN TO EMBRACE MARKETING

If you are serious about succeeding at entrepreneurship in any form, then you must embrace marketing. Most small business owners have a great product/service, a lot of ambition and plenty of knowledge about servicing their customers. But, they have little or no knowledge of marketing (especially online).

MARKETING SUCCESS BY THE NUMBERS

What is it? It’s a process whereby you do the same thing on a consistent basis over a period of time. This system will lessen your workload, increase your sales, generate new leads and save you money. Instead of putting together the dreaded “marketing campaign” on major holidays or for special events, you will be marketing all year long.

The best thing about marketing success by the numbers is that it gives you a workable plan to stay on solid footing. That way, you don’t have to market in panic mode, eg, “If this campaign doesn’t work, then I might have to close shop.”

When you start marketing on a consistent basis, you are constantly drawing new customers into your fold. So, the ups and downs of the economy will have less of an effect on your business.

DON’T ADVERTISE, MARKET

What’s the difference? Advertising usually refers to paid ads, spots, campaigns, etc. Marketing is all of the ways you get the word out about your business — paid or unpaid. Handing out flyers is marketing. Placing a classified ad in the newspaper is advertising.

Marketing success by the numbers includes paid and unpaid advertising. But, the paid methods are very low-cost (eg, under $20/month) and you will be able to implement them immediately.

Most small businesses market out of a sense of hopeful desperation, ie, sales are slow, so let’s “advertise.” You put all of your eggs in one basket and it almost never works out the way you hope. This, “shotgun marketing” rarely, if ever, works. You need a consistent plan.

GENERATE CONSISTENT SALES AND NEW LEADS

Which would you rather do: send out 1,000 postcards at once, or send out 10 a day, every day? Consistency and time are all you need as far as marketing to grow a business. It doesn’t matter what your business is, if you market consistently – to the right group – over a period of time, your business will grow!

Did you know that getting rich is simple? Not easy, simple. The same goes for losing weight, getting into shape, becoming a better, writer, runner, speaker, teacher, etc. Practice and time — that’s all it takes to become a better “whatever.”

The problem most small business owners have is impatience and sheer frustration that the business “is just not working.” Rarely is that the case. The truth is, you probably haven’t prepared for the long haul.

Remember, in business, the first few years, you are usually just greasing the pipes. After that, you shouldn’t have to work so hard for every sale.

Look at it this way, just because you send out 5,000 flyers does not mean that customers are going to start banging on your door. Especially when you consider that most buyers have to see your message 7 to 28 times (depending on which source you read) before they will act. It’s called building name [brand] recognition — and equally as important, trust.

After this, you have to wait until your customer has a need/desire for your product or service. Then, you have to be in the right price range.

In essence, you have to wait for all of these factors to align before a sale can take place. Seems like a long time? It’s really not.

CREATE A MARKETING PLAN THAT SAVES YOU TIME, MONEY & EFFORT

If you don’t absorb anything else, remember this: marketing is the life-blood of every business.

That’s why marketing success by the numbers is such a necessary, viable, common-sense approach to marketing. It’s easy, low-cost and practically runs itself.

When you create a schedule, which the book outlines how to do, your marketing goes on auto pilot, leaving you more time to fiddle with why you opened your doors in the first place — to dazzle your customers with your wonderful product/service.

No more stressing about when to do this, how much that will cost, whom to call to get that done, et cetera. You will be able to work this plan yourself, or outsource it to someone else. The bottom line is, you won’t ever have to worry about marketing again.

GET NATIONAL EXPOSURE

One thing you will learn (if you don’t already know it), is the bigger they are (magazines, newspapers, etc.), the slower they move. So, just continue to market and run your business and media attention will come because consistency builds traction.

THERE IS A MARKET FOR EVERYTHING

Think of all the products you are bombarded with on a daily basis. How do you explain purses that have a waiting list of two years to purchase; $1,500 boots that you can’t tell from $50 boots; and sweat suits that cost $400?

It’s brilliant, consistent marketing – that’s the explanation!

When you hear “email marketing” what do you think of? Emails from chain stores? Sales pitches? How about … a solution to drum up business? Email marketing and freelancers actually go together like peanut butter and jelly.

As both a freelance writer and email marketing expert, I’ve found that an email marketing campaign can give people a taste of your writing style, get you connected with more people and help you learn what your strengths and weaknesses are. You don’t even need a website; many email service provides allow you to collect submissions from Facebook pages, or with a URL they host.

How to Get a Writing Job Using Email: 5 Steps

So how do you go about this? Follow these 5 steps.

1. Find Your Focus

I work in marketing, so I look for blogs in need of marketing advice when I’m hunting for places to write. I also have a considerable amount of knowledge in the field of environmental science, so sometimes I fuse the two and talk about green marketing.

What are your interests? What’s your expertise? Think about what you’re passionate about and use that to narrow down what you want to email about, which will attract the right leads. This will also help you figure out where you should be pitching your writing.

2. Make a Promise

Now you need to offer potential subscribers something to entice them to sign up. For example, I might offer to send them free marketing tips once a week.

Anything your audience will find helpful will work. Maybe you write up reviews about new products, or maybe you’re good at humorous stories. Whatever bait you choose, make sure you follow up on what you’re promising.

3. Create Your Emails

Here’s your chance. People are asking you to deliver material you’ve written right in their inbox. It’s your time to shine and really show them why they should outsource their writing work to you.

The Subject Line: Why It’s So Important When Learning How to Get a Writing Job Using Email

Composing emails will be different from other pieces. You’ll need to put special attention into the subject line because it’s the first thing your subscribers will see in their inbox. What tends to work the best? I’ve found that asking a question, making a promise or offering a solution to a common problem all work well.

For the body of the message, put compelling content at the top so you can convince subscribers to keep reading.

4. Ask for Feedback

Email allows you to have a two-way conversation with subscribers very easily. Invite subscribers to reply to your emails with any questions, feedback or opinions. This communication will help you nurture relationships along with giving you an idea of what your audience is interested in.

You can also try surveying your subscribers. Keep it brief, asking questions that will help you find what your strengths and weaknesses are. Sample questions can be:

Are they happy with what you provide?

What other topics would they like you to talk about?

Who else are they following?

SurveyMonkey and SurveyGizmo are both good places to check out for creating surveys.

Communicate the feedback you receive to prospective clients you’re pitching articles to; they’ll be impressed you know and listen to what people want.

5. Network

Emails can be shared very easily. Include buttons to your Facebook, Twitter and other social sites so subscribers can follow you and share your material on those platforms.

Include a link in your emails that encourage sharing with a friend; put a link to your sign up form in the email letting people know they can subscribe if the email was forwarded to them.

When your writing gets spread around, you can easily catch the eye of someone looking for a freelance writer. You can also ask your network to mention your name to anyone who is looking.

Go through these five steps, and you’re on your way to building a bigger audience, finding more clients and getting your work widespread.

The Best Part of Learning How to Get a Writing Job Using Email

It’s practically free and can be done from anywhere! If you’re a new freelance writer just starting out with no marketing budget, it’s one of the easiest, most cost-effective ways to start landing gigs.
