To Make Money Self-Publishing Ebooks, It Pays to Learn How to Write Fast!
I write in the non-fiction, “how to” genre and one of the reasons I’ve been so successful as a self-published author is that I’m constantly pumping out new titles.
The more you publish, the more money you can make, especially when you have so many distribution outlets to tap into once your ebook is written (eg, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Smashwords, Lulu, CreateSpace, etc.). Think of it this way — the more ebooks you have to upload, you’re getting paid multiple times for the same product (for the same work).
Talk about evergreen income!
In this ebook pullout, I divulge how I write so many ebooks. FYI, I spent the whole year in 2011 self-publishing and uploading some 50 titles to Amazon. While that’s a bit extreme, it proves that you can self-publish a lot of titles if you’re willing to work hard (and it is hard work — don’t let anyone tell you any differently).
But, it is sooooooo rewarding. I look forward to the end of every month, because that’s when I receive my ebook royalties from the biggies (Amazon and Barnes & Noble) — right in time to handle those first of the month bills, eg, the mortgage!

Update: May 28, 2012. I wrote the following article last year. On April 10th of this year, my 18-year-old nephew joined the U.S. Air Force. Even though I have uncles who served in Vietnam, friends who served in desert storm and others who were deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, this day has taken on an even more special meaning for me.
There’s nothing like having someone you love desperately in the military to underscore just how dangerous their jobs are, and how crucial they are to preserving the American way of life. So take a moment to thank a soldier today. Tweet, give a shoutout on Facebook, wave to them as you make your way through the airport terminal, honk at them when you drive — do SOMETHING — no matter how small, to let them know how much you appreciate them.
To my nephew — I love you so much and am very, very proud of you.
What Is Memorial Day?
Memorial Day is an American holiday that celebrates men and women who’ve lost their lives serving in the military. It is celebrated on the last Monday in May every year, and marks the unofficial start of summer.
How Americans Celebrate Memorial Day
Many Americans visit military cemeteries and memorial sites, then usually attend a town parade and fireworks celebration. Most celebrate with cookouts where friends and families gather, ie, backyard barbeques complete with music, decorations and even games.
How Memorial Day Differs from Veteran’s Day
Veteran’s Day is another American federal holiday set aside to honor the nation’s military service men and women. It is celebrated on November 11th every year, and it differs from Memorial Day because it honors all veterans – the living and the dead.
Little-Known Memorial Day Fact
A Sad Reality: Why So Many of Our Youth Don’t Know What Memorial Day Is
It almost made me cry when I read this story on the Chattanoogan.com about Memorial Day. A military wife describes why so many teens don’t know what this holiday is all about.
As a freelance writer, the story particularly saddened me because I thought, “Where would we be in this country without freedom of the press?”
Who ensures freedom of the press and other civil liberties? Our military. They die for us to be able to say, write, yell and scream almost anything we want. It’s a freedom so many of us take for granted, and too many don’t have in the world.
I have several uncles who served in the Army in Vietnam, many friends in the Navy and my ex-fiance was a Marine, so the military is a part of my life. But more than that, with the current wars we’re in, the dangers our troops face daily and with July 4th looming just ahead (we wouldn’t be “independent” without the service of our troops), it unnerved and saddened me that so many of our youth don’t know what this day is really about.
So if you have a child in your life (your own, a niece, nephew, stepchild, godchild, neighbor child, etc.), while you’re enjoying that beer, wondering what to throw on the grill and looking forward to hanging out with friends and family, be sure to pull them aside and ask if they know what Memorial Day is.
If they say yes, ask them to tell you. If they don’t, be sure that you tell them what this day is REALLY about. It only takes a couple of minutes, but imparts a lifetime of knowledge and hopefully gratitude.
The last paragraph of that story in the Chattanoogan summed it up brilliantly. It stated:
“So while you’re enjoying that cold beer, a good burger, hotdog, or some old fashioned bbq, while you’re enjoying spending time with your friends and family, take time to remember some of our troops who currently aren’t enjoying any of that, because they’re deployed.
Take time to remember some of our troops will never enjoy those things again, because they gave up their lives for our country, and for our freedom. And remember the families that will be celebrating without their brave Soldier, Sailor, Airman and Marine.”
Contact The Vets in Your Life This Memorial Day
If you know a veteran — even distantly — contact them today. Send them an email, a shoutout on Facebook, a tweet on Twitter, a thank you voice mail, etc. — to let them know how much you appreciate their service.
It doesn’t matter if they served in Vietnam decades ago, or are currently deployed in Afghanistan or some other foreign land, let them know that you’re thinking about their sacrifice and appreciate all they’ve done to ensure your freedoms.
Then, enjoy your family and friends today – and be safe.
If you’re a regular site reader, you know that I started out as “just” a freelance writer. Then, I learned SEO, which led to making money online over and beyond writing copy for clients. In addition to overseeing an SEO writing company, I write and sell ebooks; promote affiliate products; and develop and teach online seminars. One thing all of my ventures have in common though is that I use article marketing to promote them.
I’ve used this form of marketing for years. You may have heard of it by it’s more fancy name these days (content marketing), but when you break it down, it’s still just article marketing.
I get questions all the time about marketing, eg:
How to get more freelance writing clients;
How to sell ebooks online;
How to make money in affiliate marketing;
Why Article Marketing Is So Effective These Days
Hands down, article marketing remains one of the most efffective ways to promote anything online. And, it’s perhaps even more effective these days because what people want is information before they make a purchase. Why? Because the face-to-face interaction you get with brick-and-mortar busiinesses isn’t there. So, the next best way to sell your product/service online is to give prospects as much helpful, beneficial information as you can.
Article marketing is tailor made for this type of online promotion.

Article Distribution: 3 Places to Submit Your Content to Maximize Traffic and Sales
Writing the content is just half of the equation. Where you distribute articles is just as critical. With that being said, here are three of my favorite article distribution outlets. They keep my online sales steady by driving traffic to my websites and blogs, and growing my subscriber lists as well.
Final thing — you must submit content regularly for article distribution to be effective. This can make it tedious for some. But, it’s one of the most effective ways to get the word out about your business online. It’s also free and pays dividends for years to come.

If you’re a regular site reader, you know that I’m an avid ebook writer. I’ve written and self-published over 50 ebooks to date, with plans to publish many more in the years to come.
Because of my background, I get a lot of questions from aspiring ebook authors and in the fall of 2010, I held an ebook writing tournament. It was wildly successful, so I turned that experience into an ebook writing seminar.
Why I Cancelled My Ebook Writing Workshops
In the spring of 2012, I cancelled that seminar because my schedule just didn’t allow me to hold it regularly enough for participants. Also, many seemed to want/need more hand-holding than I could give without completely restructuring the workshop.
One day, I may put another one together again, but for right now unfortunately, it’s just not something I have time for.
You’ll learn how to:
–>Discern whether your ebook will be profitable;
–>Write an ebook — fast; and
–>Market your ebook to start getting sales quick!
I wrote an article today about how to start writing and selling your own ebooks online. It was inspired by an email I received from a wannabe ebook author who emailed me, writing:
I live in Finland and have been out of work for a while. I am a fitness instructor, nutritionist and parent. I have written articles for newspapers [about nutrition] before . . . but nothing I got paid for. I love writing and I want to really focus on writing ebooks but don’t know where to start. You have a lot of books/courses on your website, the one I was particularly interested in was the inter-active 4 day course – how to write an e-book in 3 days, market it and start getting sales within a week.
Any help would be appreciated.
Editor Note: Some identifying details were changed.
Inkwell Ebook Writing E-Course Announcement: I wanted to take this opportunity to make an announcement about the ebook writing and marketing courses on the site. Both have been discontinued, for three reasons:
(i) I simply don’t have time to offer them: Between my ebook writing and handling client projects, my hands are always full and I have to cut back somewhere.
(ii) The current ebook writing courses are not hands-on: The biggest benefit that many who took the courses said they got from them was the inspiration; the “push” they needed to get going. And, this is all I wanted them to be. But, many seem to want/need much more hands-on guidance than I can give. I could put together a more detailed (expensive) course to offer, but again, my schedule is packed for the foreseeable future, but there is some good news, which is . . .
(iii) New self-publishing course is coming soon! I will be writing up a review on an ebook writing / self-publishing ecourse by a fellow self-publisher. This course has everything I would put into one if I had time to develop it. Stay tuned!
I’ve never “partnered” with another professional in this manner, so I’m psyched to be able to do so. Sometimes, you don’t have to invent your own wheel, but be smart enough to ride on those others have created! As I said, I will be reviewing all the material over the next week or so, and then write up a detailed review. This way, you’ll know exactly what you’re getting.
So, stay tuned for this!
